Two silhouettes. Both iconic. Both everywhere — on the streets, at festivals, all over Instagram. But the Adidas Samba and the Adidas Gazelle are not the same thing, and choosing the right one can make all the difference to your look.
If you've ever stared at your screen unable to decide between the two, this guide is for you.
The Story Behind Each Model
Adidas Samba — Born on Ice, Made for the Streets
The Samba was created in 1950 for football players training on frozen pitches. The thick rubber sole and reinforced toe cap weren't about aesthetics — they were a necessity. Decades later, the silhouette left the pitch and entered urban culture, becoming a symbol of modern streetwear.
What defines it visually: the T-toe panel on the toe box, the folded suede tongue, and that characteristic sole thickness that gives it a slightly chunkier feel without going overboard.
Adidas Gazelle — The Subculture Favourite
Launched in 1966 as a multi-sport training shoe, the Gazelle took a different path. In the 80s and 90s it was adopted by punk, B-boy and Britpop movements. Oasis wore Gazelles. British football fans wore Gazelles. Today it remains one of the most versatile silhouettes in the Adidas catalogue.
Its signature: a lower profile, cleaner lines, and a visual lightness that makes it easy to pair with almost anything.
Samba or Gazelle? It Depends on Your Style
Choose the Samba if... you like looks with more character and personality — the Samba has a strong presence on the foot. It works really well with wide-leg trousers, cargos or cuffed jeans, because the thick sole balances out that volume. It's also the model with the most collaborations on the market (Wales Bonner, Sporty & Rich, Palace, among others), so if you're into special editions, this is where the action is.
Choose the Gazelle if... you prefer something more understated and timeless that goes with everything. Is your wardrobe more minimalist or leans towards casual? The Gazelle fits perfectly. It works equally well with slim jeans, tailored trousers or even dresses, and it's noticeably lighter on the foot.
What If You Want Both?
Honestly? You wouldn't be the first. The Samba and the Gazelle complement each other well in a wardrobe: the Samba for days when you want your shoes to do the talking, the Gazelle for when the focus is on the rest of the outfit.
If you can only choose one right now, think about your dominant style. If you tend to wear voluminous pieces and lean towards an urban aesthetic, go Samba. If your style is cleaner and more versatile, the Gazelle rarely disappoints.
